Panelists: Derek Dagnan, Senior Portfolio Manager, Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System Theresa Sexton, Managing Director, Claritas Capital, LLC Eric Keen, Partner, Council Capital Location: University Club of Nashville, Wedgewood Room Panelist Biographies: Carol B. Womack, Principal of Diversified Trust, joined the firm in 2009 and oversees the company’s private equity strategies. She is a member of the Investment Team and the Investment Strategies Group. Prior to joining the company, Carol spent 23 years at Vanderbilt University and most recently served as the Managing Director of Private Markets. In that capacity, she was responsible for a diversified global portfolio of private equity investments and was an integral member of the team overseeing Vanderbilt’s endowment fund. She began her career in public accounting at KPMG. Carol graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Middle Tennessee State University. She received a Master of Business Administration cum laude from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Carol is a member of the Board of Directors of Community Health Charities of Tennessee as well as of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants. In addition, she is a member of Steering Committee for Private Equity Women Investor Network and was appointed to Investment Advisory Council for Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System.
Derrick C. Dagnan, CFA, Senior Portfolio Manager at Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System has over 12 years of institutional investing experience primarily focused on healthcare companies and industries. Mr. Dagnan has developed expertise in healthcare regulatory analysis and company and industry analysis of: pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, managed care, and healthcare services. Mr. Dagnan joined the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS) as a Senior Portfolio Manager in 2009 and was charged with managing a large-cap healthcare portfolio. Since joining TCRS, Derrick has taken over responsibility for the equity index funds, the TN 529 plan, the BEST College Savings Plan, and the Chairs of Excellence University Investment Fund. In 2013, Mr. Dagnan became primarily responsible for the start-up and management of a non-investment grade and alternative credit fund that focuses on domestic and international high yield and private credit investments. As a member of the TCRS Alternatives Team, Derrick routinely reviews private credit, private equity, and real estate investments. Prior to joining TCRS, Mr. Dagnan was a sell-side equity research analyst at Avondale Partners, where he followed the facilities and post-acute care healthcare space. Prior to Avondale, Derrick was a sell-side equity research associate at Jefferies & Co. focused on healthcare facilities, post-acute care, labs, distributors, and healthcare IT. Prior to beginning his investment career in 2002, Derrick was a design engineer for Ingersoll Rand. Mr. Dagnan holds a BS in Engineering from Purdue University, a MBA from Vanderbilt University, and is a CFA charterholder.
Theresa Sexton is a Managing Director at Claritas Capital, LLC where she spends her time sourcing and evaluating privately held companies seeking early and growth capital. She focuses on healthcare, technology, and business services companies primarily located in the southern corridor of the US. In addition, Theresa works with existing portfolio companies on near term business planning and also leads business development efforts on behalf of the firm, which also includes debt and real estate fund strategies. She spent over 10 years with Massey Burch Capital Corp., a venture capital firm, where she was involved in investor services, fund administration, cash management, and special projects involving the Small Business Administration, in addition to internal transaction support. Currently, Theresa serves on the boards of Dobie Media and Search Group Partners and provides support for Counsel on Call; Entrada; and StudioNow. She earned an M.Acc and MBA from Belmont University.
Eric H. Keen is a General Partner at Council Capital where he brings over nine years of experience in private equity. During those nine years, Eric has completed 24 transactions and served as a board director for seven companies. Prior to joining Council in 2013, Eric worked for DW Healthcare Partners, most recently as a Principal. Eric has also worked for The Riverside Company, Norwest Equity Partners, Marakon Associates and Credit Suisse First Boston. He received his BA in Finance and Political Science with honors from the University of Illinois.
